Common FAQs
How long will the boxes last? The exterior of the boxes are made out of wood. If properly maintained the life of the boxes could be more than 10 years.
Does the wood need to be treated over time? Yes, proper maintenance for wood in an outdoor setting requires a stain and water sealent to protect it from the outdoor elements in New England.
How many plants can fit? The number of plants that can fit varies on the size of the box and the types of plants. For example, in our large vegetable box, I’ve grown 3 tomato plants, 3 pepper plants, 3 bean plants, 3 snap pea plants, and several marigold flower plants all together at the same time with space left over to add additional plants. In our smaller planter (for our front door) we've grown a medium-sized mandevilla plant with marigold flowers and persian shield plants.
What is the maintenance for the plants? Once planted, you need to take care of the physical plant (dead head, pick fruits etc.). About once every 4-8 weeks depending on the temperature and rainfall, you will need to add more water to the boxes.
What is the maintenance for the boxes? Boxes will need to be treated with a stain and sealer to extend the life of the box. The interior of the box does not require maintenance
Do you need to empty them at the end of the season? You do not need to empty the boxes at the end of the season.
Why are they so expensive? While our boxes may seem expensive compared to other planters. Ours are locally, handmade, using materials from local suppliers, and have a water reservoir to reduce watering maintenance. We believe the value added to your gardening experience is well worth the price to purchase these planters.
How much soil is needed to fill a box? The amount of soil required varies depending on the size of the box. Soil not included.
Do the boxes come filled? The boxes are delivered and installed with everything except soil and water. Soil installation could be completed for an additional charge.
What size boxes do you have? Small Planter - 18"(L) x 16"(W) x 18"(H) - Cost = $399 Medium Planter - 6'(L) x 3'(W) x 3'(H) - Cost = $999 Large Planter - 8'(L) x 4'(W) x 3'(H) - Cost = $1,099 Medium Timber Planter - 8'(L) x 4'(W) x 2'(H) - Cost = $1,199 Large Timber Planter - 8'(L) x 4'(W) x 2'(H) - Cost = $1,450
Do you make custom designs? Custom boxes are available.
Do they work? YES! We have installed several planters on our own property for several years now. They do work! Once there is water in the reservoir, plants are able to stay watered as they need. There is no more daily watering or questioning how much or how little water to add.
Can you move them? Depending on the size, yes. If a planter is emptied you could move them, however they are very heavy.
What is the preparatory work prior to installation? Boxes need to be placed on a level surface. Uneven ground could interfere with the water level held inside the box.
How do you prevent animals from eating your vegetables? The best way to prevent animals from interfering with your plants is to install a physical or chemical fence. Fences are not included.
